THE GARDENERS' SANCTUARY

This rural site was designed for keen gardeners who wanted a generous kitchen garden and beds full of flowering plants.

A breakfast terrace is positioned near the house, where the couple can enjoy a morning coffee in the sun.

The layout draws a visitor along the main planting area, through the pergola arches and across stepping stones in the reflecting pools, to another seating area where the couple can make the most of the evening sun with friends.

The interlocking paths, terraces, pools and carefully-chosen high-quality materials created a modern aesthetic, which is what the couple wanted. This is where details are all-important. The same ground plan could be reimagined with another set of materials for a completely different rustic "cottage" feel.

The couple wanted to retain the existing apple tree on their lawn. Newly-added small trees, hedges and pergola arches help create a lasting third dimension.
